World Rainforest Day
22nd June every year is World Rainforest Day, which calls upon us to celebrate and protect the planet's lungs - rainforests. These special environments pump out 20% of the world's oxygen and absorbs massive amounts of carbon dioxide. They are also the natural home and shelter for over half of the world's species. Here, at Twisted Leaf Editing, trees and by extension, forests and rainforests hold an incredibly special place in my heart. Which is why it's important to observe this day which you can find more about here. Fun fact: Did you know that Scotland has it's very own rainforest which isn't tropical but a coastal temperate rainforest? It's really cool! (I also suggest, if you're in Cornwall, visiting the Eden Project, and taking a wander through the tropical biome, it's beautiful!)
For now, let's take a walk in the forests:
The Jasmine Throne - Tasha Suri. -> A queer fantasy inspired by the history and epics of India, the mysteries of the jungle play a big part of this trilogy. Reviews
The Word for World is Forest - Ursula K. Le Guin. -> A classic speculative sci fi fantasy that tackles imperialist consumerism and the destruction it wreaks in nature. Reviews
The Mountains Rise - Michael G. Manning. -> A high fantasy involving a young man uncovering the secrets of the woods and hunted the forest gods. Reviews
The Butcher of the Forest - Premee Mohamed. -> A dark fantasy horror involving a female protagonist searching for missing children and coming up against trickery, treachery, and ancient monsters. Reviews
The obvious mentions:
The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkein.
The Jungle Books - Rudyard Kipling.
Tarzan - Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Stay chill.
