National Read a Book Day
"Books are a uniquely portable magic." - Stephen King
For those of you in the UK, do you remember the book fair? The one with the bus filled with books that we were allowed to choose from and take home? I remember taking home copies of books recommended by my teachers, I believe that's where my old copy of The Hundred Mile an Hour Dog came from. But I digress.
Today is National Read a Book Day, celebrated annually on 6th September, it encourages anyone who observes to pick up and read a book. It's a gentle reminder that reading is not just about work, research, homework, or a bedtime routine; it's also an excuse to slow down and read for any bookworm that wants to.
There are many types of books for many types of readers, from your novels to comic books, from e-books to audiobooks. Just remember, you don't have to finish the entire book, cover-to-cover!
Visiting your local libraries, reading to the young people in your life, hosting a book club, and heading to your favourite bookstore are all ways to observe and celebrate this day.
Reading is very beneficial for the mind! There's countless studies highlighting the benefits, and they include: - Improving vocabulary and writing skills. - Increasing memory. - Developing analytical thinking. - Helping with focus and concentration. - Increasing your knowledge.
If you've been putting off reading a new book that's been added to your to be read list (we all have one), maybe today is the day to pick it up! Maybe you want to share an old favourite with the kids, or share a new love with your close family.
No targets, no goals, no chore. Just a simple day of celebrating books, and reading as a hobby.
If you do pick up a book today, don't forget your tea and biccies to enjoy it with!
